Public Eye Talk on “Cataract & Glaucoma” 8th Oct 2011

On 8th October 2011, KPJ Healthcare Berhad’s eye centre Pusat Pakar Mata Centre for Sight commemorated World Sight Day with a public eye talk by Medical Director, Dr. Choong Yean Yaw, on ‘Cataract & Glaucoma’.

A cataract is the clouding of a part of the eye called the lens. In most cases, it is a degenerative change of the lens (an ageing process) as people get older. One will face several symptoms such as blurred vision (glaring), change of colour vision, double vision and increasing of spectacle power. Until now, there is still no medication or diet that can bring the development of cataract to a halt.

Glaucoma is widely known as “the sneak thief of sight” where people will face gradual loss of vision due to high intra-ocular pressure killing the optic nerve with permanent loss of vision resulting in blindness. Here, Dr. Choong once again pointed out that early detection is the key to treating and halting the effects of Glaucoma. In order to let the public truly understand the importance of early detection, Dr. Choong described the negative impacts one will encounter due to visual disability.

After the talk, the centre conducted free eye check to the public. Once again, Pusat Pakar Mata Centre for Sight took the initiatives to educate and create awareness of eye care among the public as part of its corporate social responsibility.
