World Glaucoma Day 16th & 17th March 2013

In an effort to combat one of the leading causes of preventable blindness worldwide, KPJ Healthcare Berhad’s eye centrePusat Pakar Mata Centre for Sight actively involved in the official World Glaucoma Day once again through free glaucomascreening, raising awareness and educational events on both days 16th and 17th March 2013 at Rawang and PJ eye centre respectively.

Known as “the sneak thief of sight” glaucoma is characterized by gradual loss of vision due to high intra-ocular pressure killing the optic nerve with permanent loss of vision resulting in blindness. Early detection is the key to treating and halting the effects of Glaucoma.

Pusat Pakar Mata Centre for Sight truly understands that it is crucial to educate people about the value of early detection. For a disease that causes permanent blindness, it is truly unacceptable that so many people remain unaware of its impact and consequences.Visual disability has far reaching implications, touching on all aspects of human developments – social, economic and quality of life.

This event saw a strong attendance from the community. Both cataract and refractive surgeons, Dr. Helen Tan Chen Chen and Dr. Lai Voon Ping presented on the topic of ‘Glaucoma: How much do you know?’ and ‘Glaucoma: The silent thief of sight’, to educate the guests on the importance and prevention of glaucoma. It was glad to see that the public showed strong interest and eager to know more on glaucoma disease, as they frequently raised questions during the doctors’ presentation. To ensure the community were well-equipped with the correct knowledge, Dr. Helen and Dr. Lai patiently answered their doubts as well.

As an appreciation, the guests were treated to refreshment and walked away with goodies bag. We are proud and glad that we can make a difference to the lives of the community.
